Professor Carrie Newlands is a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at the University of Surrey’s School of Medicine, serving as Lead for Clinical Skills and Deputy Lead for Admissions. Her expertise spans skin cancer management, particularly basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, and she co-authored UK national guidelines on these topics. She chairs the SCC-After team, which secured a £2.8M NIHR grant for radiotherapy research in high-risk cSCC. Her roles also include involvement with the Royal College of Surgeons’ Invited Review Mechanism and co-leading the Working Party on Sexual Misconduct in Surgery (WPSMS) to address cultural change in surgery.
Her research focuses on surgical oncology, including Merkel cell carcinoma, sentinel lymph node biopsy, and surgical efficiency via Lean principles. She has contributed to over 50 peer-reviewed articles, with recent work on suture materials in skin surgery and pleomorphic dermal sarcoma management. Awards include the 2024 Colyer Gold Medal. She holds fellowships from the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh, OMFS) and the Royal College of Pathologists.
