Carolyne Larrington is a Professor of Medieval European Literature at the University of Oxford and an Official Fellow and Tutor in Medieval English at St John’s College, Oxford. She specializes in Old and Middle English, Old Norse, and the English language, supervising dissertations across medieval and modern literary fields. Her research spans Old Norse-Icelandic literature, Arthurian traditions, medieval secular texts, and medievalism in modern culture.
Education: BA in Medieval English from St Catherine’s College, Oxford, followed by a DPhil on gnomic poetry in Old English and Old Norse, later published as A Store of Common Sense (1993). Her work bridges academic rigor with public engagement, exploring folklore, supernatural landscapes, and the intersection of medieval themes in contemporary media.
Publications include landmark translations like the Poetic Edda (2nd ed., 2014) and critical studies such as The Norse Myths (2017) and Winter is Coming (2015), which analyze the medieval foundations of Game of Thrones. Her recent The Norse Myths that Shape the Way We Think (2023) expands on earlier mythological scholarship.
She has contributed over 40 articles and book chapters, alongside creative projects like HAG (2019/2020) and 'Modern Fairies and Loathly Ladies' (2016–18), blending academic expertise with cultural storytelling. Regular media appearances and podcasts highlight her role as a bridge between medieval studies and public discourse.
