Dr. Carolyn Nessim is a Surgical Oncologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Medicine. She specializes in Melanoma, Soft Tissue Sarcoma/GIST, Gastric Cancer, and Neuroendocrine Tumors, with a research focus on neo-adjuvant therapies, immunotherapy combinations, and biomarkers of clinical response. Her work includes translational studies on oncolytic viruses and outcomes research to improve cancer care quality.

Her research involves ex-vivo evaluation of cancer treatments for melanoma, sarcoma, and GIST, alongside leadership roles in the Melanoma Communities of Practice for Champlain LHIN and the Trans-Atlantic Retroperitoneal Sarcoma Working Group (TARPSWG). She is also a mentor for junior residents and contributes to Cancer Care Ontario’s melanoma guidelines.
Recent publications highlight her work in Merkel Cell Carcinoma treatment trends, triple-negative breast cancer therapeutics, and innovative approaches to residency applicant assessment. She actively collaborates with the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute and the Global Melanoma Research Network.
Dr. Nessim teaches residents and medical students, leads the Surgical Exploration and Discovery Program for medical students, and participates in committees such as the Ontario Cancer Research Ethics Board (OCREB) and the Surgical Oncology Specialty Committee at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
