Carolyn Kuranz is a Professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Michigan’s College of Engineering. She serves as Director of the Center for High Energy Density Laboratory Astrophysics Research (CHEDAR), a National Nuclear Security Administration Center of Excellence, and holds leadership roles including Vice Chair of the Division of Plasma Physics Executive Committee and Co-Chair of the Engineering Physics Program.
- PhD in Applied Physics, University of Michigan (2009)
- Bachelor’s in Physics, Bryn Mawr College (2002)
Her research focuses on high-energy-density plasmas, hydrodynamic instabilities, radiation hydrodynamics, and magnetized plasmas, conducted at major facilities like the National Ignition Facility and Omega Laser Facility. She bridges experimental plasma physics with astrophysical phenomena through laboratory experiments.
Professor Kuranz has received significant honors, including
- APS Fellowship (2019)
- Ted Kennedy Family Faculty Team Excellence Award
- AAS Early Career Award in Laboratory Astrophysics
As Director of CHEDAR and Vice Chair of the Division of Plasma Physics Executive Committee, she drives collaborative research initiatives. Her work emphasizes advancing understanding of plasma dynamics and fostering innovation in high-energy-density science.
