Carolyn Johnston is an Assistant Professor at the Department of History, Michigan State University (MSU), within the College of Social Science. Her primary research focuses on 19th-century France, specifically working-class theater and pantomime during revolutionary periods like 1830 and 1848. She also specializes in Parisian revolutionary movements and modern European history. She teaches courses in the Integrative Studies in Arts and Humanities (IAH) program, including IAH 202 and IAH 221C on Paris’s history.
As the historian for MSU’s Cisplatin/Carboplatin Project, she documents oral histories and archival materials related to the development of these chemotherapy drugs in Barnett Rosenberg’s laboratory. This project bridges the history of cancer research, metals chemistry, and university technology transfer. Beyond academia, she operates a regenerative-agriculture sheep farm in mid-Michigan.
Her work intersects cultural, political, and scientific history, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to understanding historical revolutions and medical advancements.
