Caroline Seyler is Assistant Professor of Earth Sciences at the University of Southern California, leading the Rock Deformation Lab. Her research combines field, experimental, and microanalytical methods to study fault/shear zone rheology and its impact on lithospheric strength and earthquake cycles.
Seyler holds a PhD in Earth and Planetary Sciences from McGill University, a BSc in Geological Sciences from Brown University, and completed postdoctoral research at University of Minnesota Twin Cities and University of Texas at Austin. Her experimental work utilizes high-pressure apparatuses including Griggs, Deformation-DIA, and Paterson systems.
Research investigates deformation mechanisms in crustal and mantle rocks, with emphasis on subduction interfaces, blueschist rheology, and earthquake mechanics. Current projects examine metamorphic-mechanical feedbacks during subduction initiation, frictional healing in clay-rich gouges, and melt-rock interactions in peridotites.
Publications demonstrate systematic approach to constraining rock rheology under extreme conditions, with applications to seismic hazard assessment and plate boundary dynamics. Recent work advances understanding of strain localization processes and strength evolution in subduction zones.
