Previously, she served as a Senior Lecturer at Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster and was a member of the "Junges Kolleg" at the Nordrheinwestfälische Akademie der Wissenschaften und Künste.
Her educational background includes:
- Habilitation (2016-2022): "Emotion's Empire and the Rise of the Novel. Cultural Politics of Attachment, Grieving and Coping in the Anglo-Atlantic, 1688-1847" at Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster
- PhD (2015): "Critical Branding: Postcolonial Studies and the Market" (published by Routledge in 2018)
Professor Kögler's research spans multiple intersecting fields with particular emphasis on Global Literature, Gender Studies, and Postcolonial Studies. Her work critically examines literary production across historical periods with a focus on the 18th and 19th centuries, while connecting these to contemporary issues of globalization, migration, and digital media. She has developed significant expertise in Literary Emotion/Affect Studies, exploring how emotions function in literary texts and how they shape cultural and political formations. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges literary studies with economics, law, and queer theory, creating innovative frameworks for understanding the relationship between literature and broader societal structures.
Analysis of Professor Kögler's recent publications reveals a consistent engagement with themes of emotion, postcolonial critique, and global literary production. Her work often examines how literature mediates complex social issues like migration, citizenship, and economic structures. There's a clear trajectory from her early work on postcolonial branding to her more recent explorations of affect in Atlantic literature and queer futures. Her scholarship demonstrates a sophisticated integration of historical literary analysis with contemporary theoretical frameworks, particularly in the areas of affect theory and posthumanism.
Her notable achievements include:
- Principal Investigator at the Cluster of Excellence, "Temporal Communities: Doing Literature in a Global Perspective"
- Principal Investigator for the Collaborative Research Centre "Law and Literature" (SFB 1385), focus on "Literature and the Market"
- Member of "Junges Kolleg", Nordrheinwestfälische Akademie der Wissenschaften und Künste (2020-2023)
- Venia for "British and Anglophone Literary and Cultural Studies" (2022)
Professor Kögler actively supervises BA and MA theses, with particular interest in projects that consider the medium within which narratives are placed. She emphasizes the importance of reflecting on formal features specific to different literary and cultural texts. Her research is supported by significant institutional funding, including her position as Principal Investigator in multiple collaborative research centers. She has co-edited several important volumes that bridge disciplinary divides, particularly between literature, law, and economics.
Her research group at Freie Universität Berlin engages with transhistorical and intersectional approaches to Anglophone literary and cultural studies. The group examines the intersections of literature with economics, law, and digital media, with particular attention to how these intersections shape contemporary literary production and reception. Current projects explore the digital literary sphere, neo-historical fiction, and the relationship between literature and market forces.
