Caroline Jay is a Professor of Computer Science and Head of Research in the School of Engineering at the University of Manchester. She holds dual qualifications in Psychology (BA, CPsychol) and Computer Science (MSc, PhD), focusing on interdisciplinary research at the intersection of these fields. As Research Director of the Software Sustainability Institute, she advocates for open and reproducible science.
Her research emphasizes software engineering and human-computer interaction, with applications in health science, creative media, and knowledge representation. She pioneered the Manchester branch of the BBC Data Science Research Partnership and leads the Human-Centred Design theme in Digital Futures. Notably, she was recognized as one of the 2022 Guardian's Top 50 Women in Engineering.
Caroline's work addresses challenges in data visualization, AI explainability, and sustainable software practices. She has supervised 21 research projects and contributed to over 158 publications.
