Caroline Attardo Genco, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology at Boston University. She holds additional affiliations with the Department of Biomedical Engineering, the Department of Medicine (Infectious Diseases), and the Program in Inflammatory Disorders at the Boston University Medical Campus. She is also affiliated with the Graduate Program in Molecular Medicine and the Immunology Training Program.
Education: She earned her Ph.D. and M.S. from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and a B.S. from the State University of New York at Fredonia.
Research focuses on three core areas: 1) Pathogen-induced chronic inflammatory disorders, 2) Innate immune responses to mucosal pathogens, and 3) Regulatory mechanisms in bacterial pathogens. Her work bridges microbiology, immunology, and infectious diseases.
Training & Mentorship: Dr. Genco has mentored numerous students, including postdoctoral trainees, PhD candidates, and undergraduates. She actively supports diversity in STEM, training minority students and international scholars from institutions like the University of Puerto Rico and Trinity College, Ireland. She currently oversees three BU institutional training grants and mentors NIH-funded trainees. Current training includes four postdoctoral and three predoctoral students.
Labs & Programs: Her lab, the Genco Laboratory, is part of the Boston University Medical Campus. She is deeply involved in the BU City Lab Program and collaborative initiatives like the Program in Inflammatory Disorders and the Immunology Training Program.
