Carolina Tropini

Assistant Professor Carolina Tropini leads an interdisciplinary research group at the University of British Columbia with joint appointments in Biomedical Engineering and Microbiology & Immunology. Her laboratory investigates gut microbiome dynamics, focusing on how environmental perturbations affect microbial communities in health and disease.

Research integrates microbiology, engineering, and computational approaches to study inflammatory bowel disease mechanisms, phage-bacteria interactions, and microbial responses to osmotic stress. The lab develops novel biosensors and microfluidic platforms to quantify microbial functions in real-time.

Professor Tropini teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in biomicrofluidics and microbiome research methods, emphasizing experimental design and quantitative analysis. She maintains an inclusive lab culture through structured mentorship programs and equity initiatives.
