Dr. Carolina Rezaval is an Associate Professor in the School of Biosciences at the University of Birmingham, UK. She leads the Rezaval Lab, which uses Drosophila to investigate the neural mechanisms underlying decision-making in conflicting behavioral contexts. Her work bridges genetics, cellular biology, and circuit-level analysis to uncover principles of behavioral choice conserved across species.
Education: BSc, MSc, and PhD in Biology from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina (2004–2009). Postdoctoral research at the University of Oxford focused on sexual behavior neurogenetics under Prof. Stephen Goodwin. Awarded a Birmingham Fellowship in 2018 to establish her independent lab.
Research Interests: Neural circuits for decision-making, prioritization of survival vs. reproductive behaviors, optogenetic manipulation of neurons, and genetic dissection of behavior. Techniques include genetics, molecular biology, thermogenetics, and confocal microscopy.
Awards: Birmingham Fellowship (2018).
Teaching: Module leader for BIO379 (Cellular Neurobiology) and lecturer for Cell Biology courses. Supervises PhD/MSc students in behavioral neurobiology using Drosophila.
Labs & Teams: Principal Investigator at the Birmingham Fly Facility, part of the Centre for Neurogenetics. Collaborates with interdisciplinary groups on functional imaging and neural circuit analysis.
Outreach: Engages in public science events, including Science Evening at Philip & James’ Church and National History Museum (Oxford) programs.
