Carolin Ioramashvili

Carolin Ioramashvili is an Assistant Professor in Innovation Policy at the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) at the University of Sussex. She holds a PhD in Economic Geography from LSE, funded by the ESRC, and has held positions at the University of Birmingham’s City-REDI and as a visiting researcher at UCLA’s Luskin School of Public Policy. Her research focuses on innovation’s role in regional development, labour markets, inequality, and policy evaluation.

Education: PhD in Economic Geography (LSE, 2021), MSc in Economic History (LSE, 2015), BSc in Economics (Maastricht University, 2014).

Research interests span regional inequality, innovation policy, and the evaluation of local growth initiatives. She currently leads a British Academy-funded project with the UK Cabinet Office’s Evaluation Task Force to improve policy evaluation frameworks. Recent work examines digitalisation’s impact on SME survival during the pandemic, corruption’s effect on firm growth, and spatial inequality in technology production.

She has published in journals like Research Policy and Spatial Economic Analysis, and is an early career editor of Spatial Economic Analysis. Awards include the British Academy Innovation Fellowship and ESRC scholarship.

Teaching includes modules on Industrial and Innovation Policy and Policy Evaluation. She supervises MSc and PhD students in areas like innovation policy, industrial policy, and regional development.
