Dr. Carol Wise is a Professor in the McDermott Center for Human Growth and Development and the Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery and Pediatrics at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW). She also serves as Director of Basic Research at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. Her research focuses on spinal genetics, musculoskeletal diseases in children, and next-generation genomic methods, particularly adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. She co-directs the TSRHC GOOD for KIDs program and leads NIH-funded projects investigating scoliosis mechanisms.
- Education: B.S. in Chemistry from Texas A&M University; Ph.D. in Biochemistry from UTSW. Postdoctoral training at Baylor College of Medicine and UTSW.
Her laboratory manages key resources like the TSRHC Scoliosis Biobank and the U.S. DNA repository for the Primordial Registry. Recent work emphasizes genomic approaches to rare diseases and molecular signaling pathways in scoliosis. She chairs the International Consortium for Spinal Genetics, Development, and Disease.
Publications highlight her focus on genetic susceptibility, molecular mechanisms, and translational research in musculoskeletal disorders. Ongoing NIH grants support mechanistic studies of scoliosis and related conditions.
- Advising & Grants: Leads NIH-funded initiatives; collaborates on clinical and genomic research projects.
- Labs/Teams: TSRHC Scoliosis Biobank, GOOD for KIDs program, and international consortia collaborations.
