Carol Von Dohlen is a Professor and Co-Director of Graduate Programs at the Department of Biology, Utah State University (College of Science). She specializes in entomology and molecular phylogenetics, focusing on the evolution of sap-feeding insects and their bacterial endosymbionts, gall formation, and host-plant associations.
- PhD in Zoology (1991) from the University of Maryland, College Park
- Research integrates molecular techniques with traditional systematics
- Mentored 14 graduate students since 1998
Research Themes:
- Evolutionary history of aphid-plant relationships
- Molecular phylogenetics of Hemiptera and Hymenoptera
- Biogeographic disjunctions between eastern North America and eastern Asia
- Genomic analysis of insect symbiosis
Scientific Awards:
- College of Science Service Award (2019)
- Mini-PEET (2005)
- Travel Fellowship (2004)
- Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship (Alternate, 1991)
Teaching: Instructs graduate courses in Insect Systematics and Evolution and Ecology and Evolution of Symbiosis, and undergraduate Genetics Laboratory courses since 2011. Leads the von Dohlen Research Group, which investigates aphid evolution and symbiotic relationships through fieldwork, molecular analysis, and collaborative studies.
