Dr. Carol Robin Buell is a Professor and Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar Chair in Crop Genomics at the University of Georgia's Department of Crop & Soil Sciences. She leads the Buell Lab within the Center for Applied Genetic Technologies (CAGT), focusing on plant genome biology, comparative genomics, and bioinformatics. Her research spans genomic studies of Arabidopsis, rice, potato, maize, switchgrass, sweetpotato, mints, and medicinal plants, with a strong emphasis on developing genomic resources like SpudDB and the Rice Genome Annotation Project. Dr. Buell's work integrates computational tools and genetic engineering to advance crop improvement and medicinal plant research.
Her research interests include genomic assembly, metabolic pathway analysis (e.g., terpenoids, carotenoids), and CRISPR-based genetic modification to enhance crop resilience and nutritional value. Key projects include overcoming plant self-incompatibility, improving sweetpotato carotenoid levels, and developing climate-resilient crops. Dr. Buell collaborates widely to translate genomic insights into practical applications for agriculture and medicine.
