Carol Petty is a Part-Time Faculty member in Sociology and Anthropology at George Mason University. Her research analyzes cultural logics of refugee incorporation in Germany, developing the theory of 'civic conversion' to explain institutional rites transforming social difference within integration programs.
Her scholarly interests include citizenship transformations, subjectivity formation in educational contexts, refugee integration policies, and sociological analysis of civic education programs. She examines how state and civic projects mediate political participation opportunities for young migrants.
With expertise in qualitative and quantitative methods, Petty has consulted for cultural institutions in Germany and contributed to the American Sociological Association's NSF-sponsored database project on sociological knowledge structure. She has taught courses spanning research methods, sociological theory, and globalization.
Petty received a Fulbright Grant to Germany and a Critical Language Scholarship to Turkey, supporting her international research on migration systems.
