Carol Farbotko is an ARC Future Fellow at Griffith University's Griffith Centre for Social and Cultural Research, specialising in critical climate mobilities. Her work examines climate-driven human mobility, Indigenous knowledge systems, and climate justice. She has held positions at the University of Melbourne, CSIRO, and the University of Wollongong. Farbotko's research has influenced international climate policy, including contributions to the UN General Assembly and IPCC reports.
Education includes a PhD in Cultural Geography from the University of Tasmania, BSc and LLB from UNSW, and environmental studies diplomas from UTAS and UNSW. She has collaborated with Pacific communities, UN agencies, and institutions like Princeton University.
Research focuses on climate migration discourses, Indigenous solutions to climate challenges, and policy impacts. Awards include the John Urry Prize and ARC Future Fellowship. She supervises doctoral research on climate adaptation in the Pacific and decentralised climate policy.
Key outputs include Nature Climate Change articles, a John Urry Prize-winning Mobilities paper, and policy briefs for UNESCO and IOM. Current projects explore Pacific-Indigenous climate mobilities and the Falepili Union treaty's implications.
