Carol Brazo serves as a Professor of Education in the School of Education at George Fox University, a position she has held since 2002. She is deeply committed to preparing critically thinking educators who transform practice and promote justice within a Christian learning community grounded in Jesus' teachings.
Her academic preparation includes a BA in History from California Baptist University (1980), an MEd in Education from George Fox University (2001), and an EdD from George Fox University (2006).
Dr. Brazo's research centers on adolescent literacy development and internationalizing teacher education through transformative cultural immersion. Her decade-long work in Quito, Ecuador examines how overseas teaching experiences reshape teacher candidates' strategies and mindsets, with specific focus on debriefing circles for self-reflection, critical pedagogy implementation, and diversity attitude formation. She uniquely integrates spiritual development with educational theory across all her scholarly work.
Analysis of her publication history reveals consistent exploration of how cultural immersion catalyzes professional transformation in educators, with recent work emphasizing resistance navigation in gender education and sustainable integration of cross-cultural insights into teaching practice.
As former Chair of Graduate Teaching and Leading (2012-2014) and SOE Leadership Team member (2015-2017), she has significantly shaped program development while mentoring graduate students through courses like EDUG 560 (Language and Literacy) and EDUG 555 (Language Arts Pedagogy). Her ongoing research continues through collaborative teams studying transformative learning in international contexts.
