Carol A. Barnes is a Regents' Professor in Psychology, Neurology, and Neuroscience at the University of Arizona. She holds the Evelyn F. McKnight Endowed Chair for Learning and Memory in Aging and directs both the Evelyn F. McKnight Brain Institute and the Division of Neural Systems, Memory and Aging. Her research focuses on the neurobiological basis of cognitive aging using animal models.
- Education: B.A. (Honors) in Psychology from the University of California, Riverside (1971); M.A. and Ph.D. in Psychology from Carleton University (1972, 1977).
Her work integrates behavioral, anatomical, electrophysiological, and molecular approaches to study lifespan brain changes, emphasizing the hippocampus and cortical networks. Recent publications highlight aging-related neural network dysfunction, epigenetic mechanisms, and therapeutic interventions.
She has received prestigious awards including election to the National Academy of Sciences (USA), AAAS Fellowship, and leadership roles in major neuroscience societies.
