Dr. Carmen Veloria serves as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs at Central Connecticut State University (CCSU), concurrently contributing to the Latin American, Latino, & Caribbean Center Executive Board. A seasoned educator and administrator, she maintains active scholarly engagement across the P-20 educational continuum through research, teaching, and community advocacy focused on race, ethnicity, and language dynamics.
Her academic foundation includes:
- BA in Political Science from Central Connecticut State University
- Master’s in Education from Boston College
- Doctoral degree in Language, Literacy and Culture from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst
Veloria's research critically examines macrosystems of disadvantage affecting Latine students through dual lenses of discriminatory macro-policies and micro-level segregation. Her scholarship innovates by developing strength-based frameworks rooted in Latine cultural concepts of Cariño, Cuentos/Conocimientos y Consejos (care, stories/ways of knowing, and advice), emphasizing culturally responsive care practices that maintain high expectations while validating lived experiences.
Recent publications reveal an intensified focus on pandemic-era educational disruptions for Massachusetts Latine students, restorative educational approaches, and intercultural integration models. This trajectory demonstrates evolving methodological sophistication from European comparative studies to U.S.-centered critical analyses of systemic inequities.
Her significant recognition includes:
- 2019 Critic’s Choice Book Award from the American Educational Studies Association for Social Justice in European Multi-Ethnic Schools: Responding to Intercultural Education
Currently leading a multidisciplinary team to develop a culturally grounded strength-based practice toolkit, Veloria bridges research and practice through national and international speaking engagements. Her administrative leadership directly informs community-engaged scholarship that challenges deficit discourses in education.
Through the Latin American, Latino, & Caribbean Center, she advances institutional initiatives promoting intercultural understanding while directing research teams that transform theoretical frameworks into practical educational tools grounded in Latine epistemologies of care and accountability.
