Prof. Dr. Carmen Nussbaum is a Professor in the Department of Neuroanatomy at the Faculty of Medicine, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU). She leads the Nussbaum Lab, dedicated to understanding neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.
Her research focuses on:
- Cellular and molecular mechanisms of aging and neurodegeneration
- Intercellular spreading of pathological proteins (e.g., alpha-synuclein, Tau)
- Lysosomal integrity during aging
- Chaperone-mediated disaggregation of protein aggregates
Using C. elegans and human cell culture, her lab employs confocal microscopy, CRISPR, and ribosome profiling. Key findings include the role of endo-lysosomal rupture in alpha-synuclein spreading and the generation of toxic species during disaggregation.
The lab is funded by various grants (details available on their website) and is located at the Institute for Anatomy II in Munich.
