Dr. Carmen McCain is a Lecturer in African Studies at the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics at SOAS University of London. Her research focuses on Hausa cultural studies, Nigerian cinema (Nollywood and Kannywood), translation studies, and cultural expression in Northern Nigeria. She has led initiatives such as the British Academy writing workshop to amplify women's voices in Hausa cultural studies.
Her research examines the intersection of media, religion, and cultural identity in Nigeria, with particular attention to censorship dynamics, linguistic diversity, and postcolonial narratives. Recent work explores translation infrastructure, creative responses to religious repression, and the evolution of Nigeria's film industries.
Her publications demonstrate consistent engagement with themes of cultural representation, media regulation, and the politics of language in African contexts. The research spans film censorship, translation studies, religious expression, and industry analysis within Nigeria's diverse media landscape.
Dr. McCain maintains active engagement with cultural practitioners and academic communities working on African cultural production and representation.
