Carmen LeBlanc is an Associate Professor in the Department of French at Carleton University, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. She holds a B.A. from UQAM, an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Ottawa. Her research focuses on variationist and historical sociolinguistics of French, particularly in North America, with an emphasis on morphosyntactic variation, dialect contact, and language identity.
Her academic career includes postgraduate work at the University of Ottawa and prior teaching experience in Atlantic Canada and Northern Ontario. She is of Acadian descent, and her work often investigates Acadian French dialects and their historical trajectories. Key research projects include SSHRC grants on Acadian French diaspora dynamics and three centuries of Francophone migrations in North America.
LeBlanc’s publications span book chapters, edited volumes, and peer-reviewed articles in journals like Diachronica and Journal of Linguistic Geography. She has presented at international conferences such as Methods in Dialectology and New Ways of Analysing Variation. Her honors include SSHRC doctoral fellowships and Carleton’s FASS Research Award for junior faculty.
Current research explores dialect contact mechanisms, language levelling in Madelinot French, and the sociolinguistic history of Acadian French through interdisciplinary approaches. She maintains active collaborations with institutions like the University of Moncton and Université du Québec à Montréal.
