Carmen Alatorre is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Theatre at the University of Victoria, specializing in Costume Design. A Latina artist originally from Mexico, she brings extensive professional design experience and academic expertise to her role within the Faculty of Fine Arts.
Her educational background includes:
- BA in Art History from Centro de Cultura Casa Lamm, Mexico City (2006)
- MFA in Theatre Design from the University of British Columbia (2010)
Alatorre's research centers on Costume Design as a critical component of theatrical storytelling, exploring how visual elements historicize contemporary social narratives. Her work bridges Art History and performance practice, emphasizing how costume design empowers acceptance and celebrates diversity. She investigates the intersection of cultural identity, material culture, and stagecraft to create transformative theatrical experiences that challenge conventional perspectives.
Her exceptional contributions to the field have been recognized with:

Alatorre has mentored numerous emerging artists through structured programs and taught as a sessional instructor at Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia. With over 90 professional design credits spanning major North American theatre institutions including Vancouver Opera, Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival, and Chicago Shakespeare Theater, she maintains active industry engagement while leading academic initiatives. Her 2023 curation of the Canadian National Exhibit at the Prague Quadrennial of Space and Performance demonstrates her international leadership in advancing theatrical design discourse.
