Carmela Epright is a Professor of Philosophy at Furman University and a Clinical Professor of Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. She holds dual affiliations in academic philosophy and clinical medical ethics. Her professional activities include serving as a clinical ethicist for multiple medical institutions and directing Furman's ethics initiatives through a Piper Foundation Grant-funded faculty seminar. Dr. Epright's research bridges philosophy and applied ethics, focusing on mental health policy, forensic psychiatry, and bioethics.
Education: She earned her Ph.D. and M.A. in Philosophy, along with an M.A. in Applied Ethics, all from Loyola University Chicago. Her teaching spans ethics, bioethics, gender studies, and philosophy of psychology.
Research Interests: Current projects emphasize evaluation and treatment of the criminally mentally ill, neuroethics, and feminist philosophy. She has published widely in bioethics, moral theory, and philosophy of law, contributing to edited volumes on mental health controversies and feminist theory.
Grants & Awards: Notable grants include a $500,000 Piper Foundation grant (2004–present) and a Mellon Foundation grant supporting her sabbatical research on forensic psychiatry.
