Carlton Patrick is an Associate Professor in the Department of Legal Studies at the University of Central Florida’s College of Community Innovation and Education. His research bridges evolutionary science, psychology, and legal theory, exploring how natural and behavioral sciences inform legal systems. He holds a J.D. from Boston University and a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Miami, with additional experience as a visiting scholar at the University of Pennsylvania and a practicing attorney.
Dr. Patrick’s work examines foundational legal concepts like disgust, morality, punishment severity, and property law through an evolutionary lens. He co-authored Objection: Disgust, Morality, and the Law (Oxford UP, 2018) and publishes in journals such as Nature Human Behaviour and Arizona State Law Journal. His teaching focuses on law and emotions, legal scholarship, and legal writing, earning multiple awards for excellence in instruction.
Recent articles (2020–2024) emphasize evolutionary explanations for legal structures, moral psychology’s role in criminal and property law, and historical trends in disgust-driven legislation. His research consistently highlights interdisciplinary connections between cognitive science and jurisprudence.
