Carlos Martinis is a Research Professor of Astronomy at Boston University's College of Arts and Sciences. He holds academic affiliations with the Departments of Astronomy, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical and Computer Engineering. His educational background includes a Ph.D. (2006) and M.A. (2001) in Astronomy from Boston University, and advanced degrees in Physics from Universidad Nacional de Tucumán, Argentina (Licenciado, 1996; Bachillerato, 1994).
Professor Martinis specializes in ionospheric physics, focusing on low and midlatitude ionospheric processes using all-sky optical imagers, satellite data, and ground-based GPS/radar systems. His research investigates equatorial Spread-F, plasma irregularities, and their impacts on radio signal propagation. Key areas include the climatology of ionospheric processes, electrodynamical coupling between regions, and inter-hemispheric studies influenced by Earth's magnetic field.
Recent work leverages the GOLD mission for nighttime equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) studies, revealing longitudinal and seasonal variations. Collaborations involve citizen scientists for geomagnetic storm observations and CubeSat initiatives like CuPID to study Sun-Earth boundaries.
