Carlos Covarrubias is a Chilean poet and part-time lecturer at the School of Architecture and Design of Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (PUCV). As one of the founders of the experimental Open City community in Valparaíso, he has deeply influenced the institution's integration of poetic and architectural practices since the 1960s.
His career spans both creative and educational domains: he studied at the National Museum of Fine Arts (1962) and PUCV (1963), shifted to poetry after 1965, and returned to active teaching in 1991. He co-founded the Amereida Workshop, a signature program combining poetry with architectural education, and established the Design Roundtable to strengthen graphic/industrial design disciplines nationally and internationally.
Covarrubias remains actively engaged through annual 'Crossings' - poetic/architectural journeys to locations like Larrea (1977), Quito (1997), and São Paulo (2012). He continues teaching the Amereida Workshop for all students at PUCV's School of Architecture and Design, bridging artistic and technical education through immersive field experiences.
Significantly involved in shaping both the cultural and pedagogical identity of the Open City community since its formation in 1969, he has been a consistent presence in its life, work, and study aspects while maintaining his part-time teaching role at PUCV.
