Carlos Arcila Calderón is a Professor in the Department of Sociology and Communication at the University of Salamanca, Spain. He is a member of the Audiovisual Content Observatory (OCA) and serves as Editor of the Electronic Yearbook of Studies in Social Communication "Dissertations." His academic career spans multiple institutions across Europe and Latin America, including previous teaching positions at the University of Rosario and University of the North in Colombia, University of Los Andes in Venezuela, and visiting professorships at institutions including Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Northwestern University Qatar, Pompeu Fabra University, Tel Aviv University, and several others across Europe and Latin America.
Dr. Arcila Calderón holds a European Doctorate in "Communication, Social Change and Development" from the Complutense University of Madrid, along with Master's degrees in Data Science and Journalism from the Rey Juan Carlos University (URJC). His educational background reflects his interdisciplinary approach that bridges communication studies with computational methods.
His research focuses on cutting-edge areas at the intersection of digital communication and social issues. Arcila Calderón has established himself as a leading scholar in computational analysis of communication, particularly in the areas of hate speech detection, social media analysis, and the application of big data methodologies to communication research. His work often examines how digital platforms shape public discourse around sensitive topics like migration, gender identity, and social inclusion. Through innovative methodological approaches combining computational linguistics with traditional social science methods, he has contributed significantly to understanding how online communication reflects and influences societal attitudes.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a clear trajectory toward increasingly sophisticated computational methods for analyzing large-scale social media data. His research has evolved from basic content analysis to advanced machine learning applications for hate speech detection, sentiment analysis across multiple stigmatized groups, and predictive modeling of social phenomena. The interdisciplinary nature of his work bridges communication science, computer science, and social psychology, creating a unique methodological framework for studying digital communication phenomena.

Professor Arcila Calderón currently leads several significant research projects, including the European project "Evaluating Hate Campaigns" and serving as local principal investigator for the Horizon 2020 project "Enhanced migration measures from a multidimensional perspective (HumMingBird)," funded by the European Commission. He is also part of research teams for projects including "The Future of Digital Citizenship in Qatar," "The Triangle of Polarization, Political Trust and Political Communication (TRI-POL)," and "What are Opinions? Integrating Theory and Methods for Automatically Analyzing Opinionated Communication (OPINION)." Additionally, he serves as principal investigator for Venezuela in the international projects "Worlds of Journalism Study" and "Journalistic Role Performance."
He has established and leads research teams focused on computational communication analysis, with particular emphasis on monitoring and analyzing hate speech in digital environments. His laboratory work involves developing and applying machine learning algorithms for large-scale text analysis, sentiment detection, and topic modeling of social media content. These technical capabilities support his broader research agenda examining how digital communication shapes societal attitudes toward vulnerable populations.
