Carla Malafaia is Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences of the University of Porto and Principal Researcher at the Centre for Research and Intervention in Education (CIIE-UP). She is also affiliated with the Center for Sociology of Democracy in Helsinki and serves as Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Cultural and Political Sociology. Her research spans youth civic and political participation, visual and digital methods, climate activism, and citizenship education.

Her research focuses on political education, youth studies, social movements, and visual participation. She employs mixed, participatory, and ethnographic methods to explore how young people engage politically, especially through digital and visual means. Her work critically examines youth responses to climate change, populism, and democratic erosion.
Her recent publications reveal a strong interdisciplinary trend centered on youth political engagement, climate futures, digital activism, and educational responses to societal challenges. Themes include youth-led climate labs, visual protest, populist attitudes, and intersectional activism.

Carla supervises MA and PhD students and has taught at both graduate and postgraduate levels. She has led major research projects such as the Portuguese subproject of the ERC-funded ImagiDem, the JUSTFUTURES project (FCT), and ClimActiC (North2020). She also leads Work Package 1 in ClimActiC, focusing on co-designing climate solutions with diverse stakeholders.
She is a member of the CIIE-UP and co-represents the strategic area Engagement of Vulnerable Young People in Education and Training. She is also active in the Portuguese Society of Education Sciences (SPCE) and has conducted research with institutions including New York University and the University of Helsinki.
