Carla Gannis is an Industry Professor at NYU Tandon School of Engineering's Technology, Culture, and Society department. She is an interdisciplinary artist and educator, exploring themes such as networked communication, digital semiotics, and speculative fiction through virtual and physical works. Her practice merges art history, emerging technologies, and humor to interrogate human and post-human conditions. Notable works include wwwunderkammer (a VR/social VR project addressing decolonization and hybrid identities), The Garden of Emoji Delights (reimagining Bosch’s triptych through emojis), and peep-o-rama (a digital sculpture critiquing gender and body politics). Her work has been exhibited globally, including the Whitney Museum and Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art.
Research focuses on digital art's intersection with technology, history, and societal issues. Media features include The New York Times, Wired, and The Wall Street Journal. Gannis regularly lectures on art and innovation, including a 2019 SXSW panel on storytelling.
