Carla Bittel is an Associate Professor of History at Loyola Marymount University and a Visiting Scholar at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (MPIWG) in Berlin. She co-organized the Department 2 Working Group 'Working with Paper: Gendered Practices in the History of Knowledge' and participated in the Working Group 'Beyond the Academy: Histories of Gender and Knowledge.'

Dr. Bittel's research focuses on the history of science, gender studies, and medical history in 19th-century America. She examines how phrenology's paper practices shaped and were shaped by gender norms, and explores intersections between science, medicine, and women's roles.
Her publications include 'Woman, Know Thyself: Producing and Using Phrenological Knowledge in 19th-Century America' (Centaurus, 2013) and 'Tools of the Phrenological Trade in Antebellum America' (2016). These works analyze phrenology's impact on gender dynamics and knowledge production.
