Carl Safina is the Endowed Professor for Nature and Humanity at Stony Brook University and founding president of the not-for-profit Safina Center. He earned his PhD from Rutgers University through seabird studies and is recognized as one of today's leading voices for nature conservation.
His research explores how humans are changing the living world and what these changes mean for non-human beings, fusing scientific understanding with emotional connection and moral advocacy. Primary research areas include animal cognition, conservation biology, marine ecology, and environmental ethics.
Honors include the MacArthur 'genius' prize, multiple book awards, and fellowships from prestigious organizations. His PBS series Saving the Ocean reaches broad audiences, while his writings appear in The New York Times, National Geographic, and scientific publications.
As founder of the Safina Center, he leads creative thought leaders advocating for ecological preservation through interdisciplinary approaches bridging science and humanities.
