Carl Sable is a Professor of Computer Engineering in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Albert Nerken School of Engineering, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. He joined the faculty in 2003 and teaches core Computer Engineering courses including Data Structures and Algorithms I/II, Senior Projects, and graduate electives in Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language Processing, and Computer Graphics.
Prof. Sable's educational background includes:
- B.S.E. in Electrical Engineering from Princeton University (1993)
- Master's degree in Computer Science from Columbia University (1999)
- Ph.D. in Computer Science from Columbia University (2003)
His research focuses on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning applications, particularly in Natural Language Processing. He has advised over 35 Master's students on AI/ML/NLP theses and led an STTR Phase II project developing a Cognitive Communications Gateway Engine using software-defined radios. His doctoral work at Columbia centered on text categorization for image classification under Prof. Kathleen McKeown.
Prof. Sable serves as Engineering Faculty Secretary and coaches student teams for the ACM Greater New York Regional Collegiate Programming Contest, with documented participation from 2017-2024. His prior industry experience includes software development for Microsoft Excel (versions 5-97) from 1993-1997.
