Carl Knappett is a Professor in the Department of Art History at the University of Toronto, where he holds the Walter Graham/Homer Thompson Chair in Aegean Prehistory. He serves as Director of the Aegean Material Culture Lab and co-directs the excavation project at Palaikastro, Crete.

His research focuses on Aegean Bronze Age political economies, Minoan pottery, material culture theory, and network analysis. He integrates cognitive science and ecological psychology into archaeological interpretation, particularly examining regional interactions and 'Minoanization' processes across the Cyclades, Dodecanese, and Asia Minor.
Recent publications highlight his work on Minoan ceramics, palace architecture, and maritime networks. His edited volumes explore interdisciplinary connections between art history and archaeology, emphasizing global perspectives.
Administrative roles include Chair of the Department of Art History (2017-2022) and Associate Chair for Graduate Studies in the Graduate Department of Art (2014-15). He teaches undergraduate courses on Aegean prehistory and graduate seminars on material culture theory.
