Carl Gunter is the George and Ann Fisher Distinguished Professor at the University of Illinois Siebel School of Computing and Data Science. His research focuses on computer security and privacy, particularly in IoT systems, mobile computing, and machine learning applications.
Research interests include access control mechanisms, privacy-preserving technologies, and security for emerging systems like smart homes and connected vehicles. His work combines formal methods with practical system implementations.
Awards include the Kenneth and Mamie Clark Award for contributions to ethnic minority graduate student development (2015). He serves as Professor in the Information Trust Institute and Coordinated Science Lab.
Recent work examines IoT security challenges in residential settings, adversarial attacks on machine learning models, and privacy issues in genomic data analysis.
