Carl Dahlström is a Professor of Political Science and Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Gothenburg. His research focuses on administrative and welfare policy, immigration policy, and political corruption prevention. He has held visiting researcher positions at prestigious institutions including Harvard University and the European University Institute.
Research Interests: Dahlström's work examines bureaucratic politics, political appointments, public procurement outcomes, and the effectiveness of governance institutions. Recent studies analyze the structural impacts of long-term care facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic and the role of political competition in procurement processes. His monograph Organizing Leviathan (Cambridge University Press) explores politicians' and bureaucrats' roles in shaping good governance.
Advising & Grants: Supervised six completed PhD students and currently guides three more. His research has been supported through collaborative projects with international partners, reflected in publications in top journals like American Journal of Political Science and British Journal of Political Science.
Labs/Teams: Engaged in interdisciplinary collaborations on governance quality metrics, including the Quality of Government Expert Survey series. Active in editorial roles for journals and research anthologies on public administration and political science.
