Carey E. Priebe is a Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at Johns Hopkins University, affiliated with the Whiting School of Engineering. He holds joint appointments in departments including Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering, as well as centers like the Center for Imaging Science and the Mathematical Institute for Data Science. His research focuses on computational statistics, kernel methods, statistical pattern recognition, and graph-based inference.
Education: BS (Mathematics, Purdue University, 1984), MS (Computer Science, San Diego State University, 1988), PhD (Computational Statistics, George Mason University, 1993).
Research interests include high-dimensional data analysis, network inference, and applications in neuroscience (e.g., fruit fly connectomics). He has pioneered methods in spectral graph clustering and statistical connectomics.
Awards: 2010 ASA Distinguished Achievement Award, 2008 Vannevar Bush Faculty Fellowship, McDonald Award for Excellence in Mentoring (2011), Fellow of ASA and IMS.
Advising: Over 30 PhD and MS students, including notable alumni now in academia and industry. Grants include NSF BRAIN Initiative funding for neuroscientific collaborations.
Labs: Active in interdisciplinary projects, including the Human Language Technology Center of Excellence and collaborations with neuroscientists to map neural circuits.
