Candace Mixon is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Religion at Reed College specializing in Islamic studies and material religion. She holds a PhD from UNC Chapel Hill, MA from McGill University, and BA from Vanderbilt University. Her research examines Shiʿi devotional practices in Iran, particularly the veneration of Fatima al-Zahra.
Mixon's current book project, 'Fatimeh Matter(s) in Contemporary Iranian Shiʿism,' analyzes devotional visual and material culture in post-war Iran. She explores how gendered religious leadership manifests through artifacts and commemorations, challenging male-centric narratives of Islamic leadership.
Her interdisciplinary work connects religious studies with visual culture and gender theory. Publications include articles on Islamic reform, material religion, and pedagogical approaches to countering Islamophobia. She serves as associate editor for 'Material Religion' and contributes to The Religious Studies Project podcast.
