Camilo Ayala Garcia is an Associate Professor in the Department of Design at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, Italy, and a researcher in the Design Friction Lab. Previously, he served as an Associate Professor at the Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia. He holds a PhD from Politecnico di Milano, an MA from Domus Academy, and dual bachelor's degrees in Industrial and Textile Design from Universidad de los Andes.
His research focuses on DIY materials, circular design, and sustainable material innovation. Notable projects include work on cashew byproduct materials, fungal biomaterials, and the Innocell Bioreactor. He has published extensively on materials-driven design, emotional material experiences, and participatory design processes.
Camilo leads the Design Friction Lab, exploring emerging technologies and materialities for circularity. He has secured patents for modular design systems and protective gear. His work bridges academia and industry, emphasizing community-driven, open-source solutions.
