Camille Steber is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences at Washington State University (WSU), affiliated with the USDA Agricultural Research Service's Wheat Health, Genetics, and Quality Research Unit. Her research focuses on hormonal control of seed dormancy, germination, and plant responses to environmental stress, particularly in wheat. She leads efforts to improve wheat resilience against preharvest sprouting and drought through molecular genetic approaches.
Her work integrates fundamental studies in Arabidopsis thaliana with applied research in wheat, aiming to translate discoveries into practical solutions. Key areas include understanding gibberellin (GA) and abscisic acid (ABA) signaling pathways, development of glyphosate-resistant wheat varieties, and collaborations to enhance drought tolerance via water use efficiency and root architecture improvements.
Steber's lab has contributed to the registration of multiple wheat cultivars (e.g., Piranha CL+, Sockeye CL+) and pioneered methods like floral dip transformation in wheat. She collaborates with experts such as Dr. Kimberly Garland-Campbell and Dr. Scot Hulbert to address complex traits affecting wheat productivity under climate change.
