Dr. Kunzelman's research interrogates the relationship between humans and media objects through an intersectional lens, specializing in science fiction manifestations across video games and film. His work rigorously examines how media forms activate racialization processes, establishing core expertise in game studies, media studies, science fiction studies, and film studies with explicit attention to racial dynamics.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals consistent thematic threads: formal analysis of science fiction video games' subjectivity production (exemplified by his 2022 monograph The World is Born from Zero), critical race theory applications to gaming culture (evident in Nuclear Gandhi and Bioshock analyses), and cross-media explorations of adaptation aesthetics. His scholarship bridges theoretical frameworks from philosophy, cultural studies, and critical race theory to dissect representation mechanisms in interactive and cinematic media.
