Calvin J. Ribbens

Calvin J. Ribbens is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Virginia Tech, affiliated with the College of Engineering. He served as Associate Department Head (2003-2015) and Department Head (2015-2024). His research focuses on parallel computing, high-end systems, computational science, and numerical algorithms. Ribbens holds a Ph.D. and M.S. from Purdue University and a B.S. from Calvin College.

Research interests include distributed shared memory systems, parallel algorithm optimization, sparse linear algebra, and grid/cloud computing. He has advised numerous graduate students on topics like resizable parallel applications and speculative parallelism. His work bridges computational science applications with system-level optimizations.

Teaching includes courses on software design, numerical methods, parallel computation, and theory of computation. Ribbens has contributed to computational grids, problem-solving environments, and adaptive scientific software frameworks. He actively participates in HPC conferences and editorial roles, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration between computer science and scientific domains.
