Callum Shakespeare is a Senior Lecturer at the Australian National University's Research School of Earth Sciences (RSES), leading the Climate and Fluid Physics Research Group since 2022. He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge (2015) and BSc degrees from ANU (2011) and UWA (2010). His research focuses on ocean-atmosphere dynamics, including internal waves, climate sensitivity, air-sea fluxes, and ice-ocean interactions. He uses theoretical, numerical, and experimental approaches, leveraging ANU's NCI supercomputer and the Climate and Fluid Physics Laboratory (CFPLab). As a Chief Investigator with the COSIMA consortium, he contributes to Australian ocean modeling efforts under the National Environmental Science Program.
Research highlights include investigating internal waves' role in coral reef refuges, developing Lagrangian filtering techniques for wave detection, and studying longwave radiation feedbacks in climate models. His experimental work explores ice melt dynamics and boundary layer processes. Shakespeare supervises PhD and Honours students and teaches climate science courses, including EMSC2021 and EMSC3039. His leadership roles include convener of the RSES Honours Program and principal investigator on projects like 'Melting of Ice Sheets' and 'Oceanic internal waves and turbulence.'
Key collaborations span institutions like the National Center for Atmospheric Research (USA) and the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science. His work bridges fundamental fluid dynamics with applied climate science, addressing critical questions about ocean circulation, climate feedbacks, and environmental change.
