Caitlin Wylie is an Assistant Professor in the Program in Science, Technology and Society at the University of Virginia. She holds degrees from the University of Cambridge and the University of Chicago. Her research focuses on the hidden labor and expertise within scientific practices, including technicians, preparators, and students whose contributions often go unacknowledged. She investigates how social structures shape scientific work and how tacit knowledge is transmitted in laboratories.
Wylie has conducted fieldwork in Arctic communities, examining interdisciplinary collaboration and environmental data co-production. She has received the Donchian Fellowship and secured NSF grants for projects like the Arctic Sensor Array in Utqiaġvik, Alaska. Her work also explores ethics in data science education and the role of curiosity in engineering pedagogy.
