CS Wareham

CS Wareham is an Assistant Professor at Utrecht University in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies within the Humanities school, affiliated with the Ethics Institute. He also holds an honorary position as Associate Professor at the Steve Biko Centre for Bioethics at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa.

Wareham's research focuses primarily on applied ethics and bioethics, with specializations in the ethics of aging and life extension, African ethical systems, and the ethical implications of artificial intelligence. His work often examines emerging biotechnologies through the lens of African ethical frameworks, contributing significantly to cross-cultural bioethics discourse. He has edited The Cambridge Handbook of the Ethics of Ageing and serves on several ethics committees including FEtC-H at Utrecht University and HREC at Wits.

His publication record demonstrates a consistent focus on ethical questions surrounding aging, extending human lifespan, and the application of indigenous African ethical systems to contemporary bioethical dilemmas. Recent work explores intersections between AI and African conceptions of personhood, medically assisted death in Portuguese constitutional law, and the relational implications of cryonics. His research shows a clear trajectory toward examining how traditional ethical frameworks can inform modern technological challenges.

Wareham has contributed to and served in advisory capacities for organizations including the Dutch Cancer Society (KWF) and the Nuffield Council on Bioethics, demonstrating practical engagement with ethical policy development.

His teaching includes courses on Ethical and Political Implications of Human Nature, Ethical Theory & Moral Practice, and Ethics in Biomedical Sciences, reflecting the breadth of his expertise across theoretical and applied ethics domains.
