Dr. C. van Nimwegen is an Associate Professor (since 2024) at the Department of Information and Computing Sciences, Faculty of Science, Utrecht University. His research focuses on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Dark Patterns, interface design, and safety-critical systems. He holds a master's degree from Utrecht University and completed his PhD in 2008. Prior to his academic role, he worked as a usability engineer and Senior Researcher at the Center for User Experience Research (Mintlab), Catholic University of Leuven.
His work emphasizes understanding user behavior in digital environments, particularly in ephemeral media and automotive interfaces. Notable contributions include the System Darkness Scale (SDS) for assessing Dark Patterns and the Functional Intelligence Tool (FINT) for Open-Source Intelligence. He has published extensively in top venues like CHI, ECCE, and IEEE conferences.
Current research explores Dark Pattern Blindness, social media behavior analysis, and spatial audio in VR. He leads the Interaction group at Utrecht, contributing to both academic and industry collaborations in UX design and cognitive ergonomics.
