C. Nathan Hatton

Dr. C. Nathan Hatton is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of History at Lakehead University. He holds a PhD in History from the University of Waterloo, an MA in History from Lakehead University, a BEd from the University of Ottawa, and a BA Honours in History from Wilfrid Laurier University. His research focuses on the intersections of sport, culture, and public engagement in Canadian society.

Dr. Hatton explores the social and cultural implications of sport in Canada, with a particular emphasis on combat sports and their impact on participants and spectators. His work bridges academic scholarship with public outreach, utilizing film and media to disseminate historical insights. He has received funding from prominent organizations such as the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), Sport Canada, and the Ontario Arts Council.

Projects currently underway include an analysis of public discourse surrounding injuries in combat sports and a documentary examining veterans living with PTSD. He also integrates his expertise in sport history into his coaching of submission grappling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, where he emphasizes the historical evolution of techniques and strategies.
