C Tom A Brown is Professor of Photonics at the School of Physics and Astronomy, University of St Andrews. His research develops novel laser systems based on solid-state gain media and applies photonics to biological and medical challenges.
Research areas include:
- Ultrafast laser system development
- Biophotonic applications in medicine and biology
- Monte Carlo modeling of light-tissue interactions
- Therapeutic applications of lasers
Recent publications (2021-2024) focus on Monte Carlo modeling of light propagation in biological tissues, particularly for photodynamic cancer therapy, skin optics, and laser surgery applications. This work combines experimental photonics with computational approaches to optimize medical treatments.
He received recognition for his work on Bessel beams (Optics and Photonics News, 2006) and leads projects funded by EPSRC, BBSRC, and STFC. His research impacts medical device development and light-based therapies.
