Bryant Walker Smith is an Associate Professor of Law at the University of South Carolina School of Law and the School of Engineering. He is also an affiliated scholar at the Center for Internet and Society at Stanford Law School. His expertise lies at the intersection of law, engineering, and emerging transportation technologies, particularly autonomous driving. He co-authored the globally influential levels of driving automation framework and drafted model legislation for automated vehicles.
Smith holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Wisconsin, a J.D. (cum laude) and an LL.M. in International Legal Studies from New York University School of Law. Prior to his academic roles, he clerked at the United States Court of International Trade and worked as a fellow at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
His research focuses on legal and policy challenges in automated driving, including regulatory frameworks, liability issues, and international standards. He has advised governments and international organizations on transportation innovation and taught pioneering courses on automated driving law.
Smith’s work emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, blending engineering principles with legal analysis to address complex societal challenges posed by new technologies.
